First things, first:
Some small changes are in effect starting with this column. Where, in the past, I’ve linked to some certain subjects in the links I’ve had in my columns, starting this week, I’ll forgo some of those and just supply the link to the website or message board.
Some of my thoughts:
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see what might be happening in the future? Unfortunately, we can’t. But 2010 might be quite an interesting year in motor sports. Will NASCAR continue to decline, as it appears it surely has, spectator wise, this past season. I’ve read that there is an up-coming “meeting” for all the tracks here in the northeast that are not DIRTcar sanctioned. Will ALL tracks that are in that category actually attend, or do some tracks think they’re above it, and won’t attend?
If any track has new rules coming out, how soon will they be announced?
In a press release that I received from DIRTcar, and a subsequent one that answered a question that I had, it now appears that OCFS will remain Independent in 2010, since no one – officials - from OC were in attendance at the DIRTcar banquet. One bit of news in the PR was that in June of 2010, Brett Hearn will again promote another “Big Show” Super Dirt Series race at OCFS. Let’s hope nothing interferes with this next one, like the “electrical” problem of this past year.
I still think that OCFS, even though it will remain Independent, still needs to do something about the “tires of choice” that are allowed at OC. And I’d surely like to see OC do a lot more as far as advertising their racing events. Car counts, as well as overall attendance in 2009 was down.
There have been rumors about no 358’s at OCFS in 2010. Hope that isn’t true. Time will tell.

to JR Motorsports? Maybe Not: Dale Earnhardt Jr. says a deal to put Danica
Patrick in his Nationwide Series car isn't imminent, and even if it were, JR
Motorsports wouldn't necessarily have the funding for the IndyCar Series' most
popular driver. Multiple media outlets have reported in recent weeks that
Patrick was on the verge of signing with JRM for a part-time Nationwide
schedule next season while continuing to run the Indy Racing League. Patrick
and JRM share a sponsor in GoDaddy.com, but Earnhardt says it doesn't make the
deal a cinch. "We've had a relationship with GoDaddy, so that makes us
look like a nice fit, but they're moving (next year), so we don't really have
it anymore," Earnhardt said after Sprint Cup practice Friday at Phoenix
International Raceway. "We're having to search
around." JRM's #88 Chevy currently driven by Brad Keselowski is sponsored
by GoDaddy.com, but the company will move to Cup next year to back the #5 Chevy
of Mark Martin at Hendrick Motorsports, which has an alliance with JRM.
Earnhardt says JRM has only "three-quarters to half a season" of
sponsors for the #88 in 2010. Earnhardt says the lack of funding is what's
driving JRM's interest in Patrick, who also has been pursued by Roush Fenway
Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing. Patrick also has met with Joe Gibbs Racing
and Richard Childress Racing, and Earnhardt says he's talked to her along with
Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. Patrick lives in the

races in 2010?: #7-Robby Gordon, who has run a full Sprint Cup schedule as a
driver/owner since 2006 [and before that was full time with RCR in the #31 car
since mid 2001], says he has enough sponsorship for only eight races in 2010.
"I'm looking at a lot of weekends off,'' a frustrated Gordon said Friday
at Phoenix International Raceway. Gordon said he has two four-race commitments
from sponsors for next season. One of his major sponsors, Jim Beam, announced
earlier in the year that it would not return to the sport. "Nobody is
spending money,'' Gordon said. "Everybody is
cutting the fat out of everything. To be in racing you have to be a pretty big
company.'' Gordon said many of the larger teams are making deals for well less
than the market value because they can afford to, but that runs teams like his
out of business. "It's sponsorship suicide,''
said Gordon, who is 34th in points. Gordon said NASCAR needs to create a
unified marketing plan so every team is on a level playing field. He said there
are so many different plans now that sponsors are confused. He expects to see
more start-and-park teams next season than ever, adding he doesn't plan to be
one. "I don't know what we're going to do,'' Gordon said.
"We're going to continue to work hard to sell races through March
of next year. After that I'm looking at a lot of weekends off.''(ESPN)(11-13-2009)
Note: There are some things being said about Robby
over on the Track Forum – about him and Indycar – some wishes from some of his
fans. I still think that if he had much
better finishing places in 2009, he might have a better chance at
landing some sponsors.

Marlin....retiring?: Sterling Marlin plans to enter Sunday's season finale at
Homestead-Miami Speedway [Marlin is not on the entry list, but the #70 Chevy
driver is listed as TBA-to be announced, so maybe.....] then, after over 30
years of life in the fast lane, will "probably" hang up his helmet.
"Will I miss it? Yeah, in some ways," said Marlin, 52, who raced his
way out of the Carter's Creek tobacco fields and into international fame with
back-to-back Daytona 500 victories in '94 and '95. "But in some ways I'll
kinda be glad when it's over. The sport has changed. It's not much fun any
more."(Racin' Today)(11-17-2009)

The
History of the Sport:
“As many of you might know, I’m a member of the
Yahoo! Race History Group – a group that really is more about the history of
open wheel racing in this country. A lot
of subjects get mentioned, and at times, we all get a large amount of e-mails
on some particular subjects. Now, if
you’re not a fan of open wheel racing – meaning Indy Cars, Sprint Cars and
Midgets and the racing from “back in the day”, you might want to skip what
follows. What follows are comments, not
necessarily in order, about some of the “memorable” Indy cars that ran in the
500. I have eliminated names, where some
of those that have posted might mention some – regarding other posters, that
is. Also, where
necessary, made corrections to “typo’s”.
New for this week:
“I have always
been intrigued by the Cornelian which ran at Indy in 1915,
Louis Chevrolet driving. It weighed only 1,100
pounds, was a monocoque (I
think the first), had four wheel independent suspension and qualified at 81
mph. The car was powered by a
the race due to engine problems. Nevertheless, this car introduced a lot of
firsts to Indy and racing in general.”
“How
about the 1948 Iddings dirt car at Indy? 233cid Offy,
set fifth fastest time of the field on the last day of qualifications with a
rookie driver and finished seventh, after having to make six or seven pit
stops for fouled plugs. Not too bad for a 1938 Big Car.”
Note: More
individual race history will continue next week.
Other racin’ stuff:
In a way, I guess you can
consider this as “racin’ stuff”: Noted
photographer Ralph Corwin has asked me to advertise that he is interested in

More racin’ stuff:
I read, somewhere on the Internet, that there
might be some changes to the modified bodies on the cars that run with
DIRTcar. Myself, I think they’ve gotten
way to big and with the down force they now create, it has harmed today’s
racing, rather than helping it. I found
this, below, on the South Jersey Dirt Racing’s message board:
http://theboard.southjerseydirtracing.com/DisplayMsg.asp?ForumID=27&Msgid=1187985&page=1

When
is someone going to figure out that a lot of the problem with the cost of
racing today is the wide bodies on these cars?. This
all started when Kenny Weld brought the bat mobile to Syracuse and instead of
telling him to take that monster home made every other car change there
bodies to try to compete with him. Dirt racing has gone downhill since that
day. We need to take the downforce out of racing by narrowing the bodies. All
the motor in the world is no good if you can't hook it up. Racing was at it's best before thay widened the bodies. It's the
cheapest way to make racing competative again. You should not have to
have a 800 horsepower motor on a 1/2 mile track to
be able to compete. Wide bodies are not the whole problem but
they are a lot of it. Something has to be done for racing as we know it to
continue. I've
been around for a long time and have seen it all. let's
here some other suggestions to cut cost. |

Medicare fraud? Really? Well, since it surely appears to be so, I can
only imagine what will happen if we were to get some kind of government type of
a medical program up and running – one that supposedly will be for not
everyone, mind you , but for us lowly tax payers. No way would any politician vote to put
themselves and/or their families in the same program they’re trying to shove

We’re being told that most everything is looking better, today. The economy is on an up swing. Uh huh! Well, quite a few times, in my columns in the past, I said that unemployment would get to be 10%. It’s there now, and higher, really. And the sad thing is that those that lost jobs, and might have been lucky enough to find some kind of “part time” are NOT included in that 10%. I’m patiently waiting to see some sob stories from the auto industry about how their car sales have gone to pot. It’s coming. They tell us that there are less and less being laid off throughout the country. HELLO!!! When you have a much smaller work force, it’s only natural that there will be fewer workers laid off, isn’t it? Why don’t any of these newscasters come out and say that?
Home
prices are lower now than what they were a few years back, but with this new
program (it has been extended) that gives new homebuyers a nice dollar savings,
it’s being reported that home sales are slightly up.
The extension: Congress approved legislation that extends
the $8,000 credit for first-time homebuyers through April 30, 2010, and creates
a $6,500 credit toward a new home purchase for existing homeowners who've lived
in their home for at least five years. The existing credit was set to expire
Nov. 30. The extension was part of a bill that also extends unemployment
benefits for 20 more weeks for states with high jobless rates, including
