Racin' Stuff:

                                                                                 By Tom Avenengo

First things, first:

Some small changes are in effect starting with this column.  Where, in the past, I’ve linked to some certain subjects in the links I’ve had in my columns, starting this week, I’ll forgo some of those and just supply the link to the website or message board.

Some of my thoughts:

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see what might be happening in the future?  Unfortunately, we can’t.  But 2010 might be quite an interesting year in motor sports.  Will NASCAR continue to decline, as it appears it surely has, spectator wise, this past season.  I’ve read that there is an up-coming “meeting” for all the tracks here in the northeast that are not DIRTcar sanctioned.  Will ALL tracks that are in that category actually attend, or do some tracks think they’re above it, and won’t attend?

If any track has new rules coming out, how soon will they be announced?

In a press release that I received from DIRTcar, and a subsequent one that answered a question that I had, it now appears that OCFS will remain Independent in 2010, since no one – officials - from OC were in attendance at the DIRTcar banquet.  One bit of news in the PR was that in June of 2010, Brett Hearn will again promote another “Big Show” Super Dirt Series race at OCFS.  Let’s hope nothing interferes with this next one, like the “electrical” problem of this past year.

I still think that OCFS, even though it will remain Independent, still needs to do something about the “tires of choice” that are allowed at OC.  And I’d surely like to see OC do a lot more as far as advertising their racing events.  Car counts, as well as overall attendance in 2009 was down.

There have been rumors about no 358’s at OCFS in 2010.  Hope that isn’t true.  Time will tell.

Going back, in time:

Going back to November 19th in:

1961

Al Keller... Died ... Keller participated in the NASCAR "Strictly Stock"/"Grand National" (predecessors to the current NEXTEL Cup) series from 1949 to 1956 with 29 career starts. He won two races during the 1954 season and was the only driver in the history of NASCAR's top division to have won a race in a foreign-built car, winning the 1954 Grand National road-race at the Linden Airport in New Jersey, driving a Jaguar.  That is until just recently, when Toyota came into NASCAR Cup racing, and Kyle Busch won.  Would you believe that there were rumors going around that Keller was the grandfather of the Busch brothers?  An e-mail from the son of Al Keller, to me, clarified that up.   In 1954 Keller began a transition to champ cars. He drove in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series, racing in the 1954-1959 and 1961 seasons with 32 starts, including the Indianapolis 500 races in all but the first of those years. He finished in the top ten 13 times, with his best finish in 2nd position, in 1956 at Atlanta and in 1961 at Milwaukee. His best Indy finish was 5th in 1961. Keller died as a result of injuries sustained in a champ car crash at the Arizona State Fairgrounds track.

Parnelli Jones won the USAC sanctioned Bobby Ball Memorial Race on the 1 Mile Dirt Oval Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix, Arizona. Rodger Ward finished second followed by Don Branson, Jim McElreath and Cotton Farmer.

1966

1977

Jimmy Oskie won the Sprint Car race at the Ascot Park Speedway, Gardena,CA. Doug Wolfgang was second followed by Steve Howard, Ron Shuman and Mike Shaw.

1978

Bobby Allison won the NASCAR Winston Cup L.A. Times 500 over Cale Yarborough at the Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, California.

1983

Steve Kinser won the CRA Sprint Car race at the Ascot Park Speedway (1/2d) , Gardena,CA. Ron Shuman was second followed by Dean Thompson, Gary Howard and Rendy Boldrini.

Sammy Swindell won the Super Sprint Car race at the Devil's Bowl Speedway, Dallas,TX. Ron Shuman was second followed by Tim Gee, Bobby Davis Jr and Shane Carson.

1988

Ron Shuman won the Don Peabody Classic CRA Sprint Car race at the Ascot Park Speedway (1/2d) , Gardena,CA. Eddie Wirth was second followed by Lealand McSpadden, Jerry Meyer and Mike Sweeney.

Kevin Olson won the USAC Midget race at the Baylands Raceway Park, Fremont,CA. Rusty Rasmussen was second followed by P.J. Jones, Dave Strickland Jr and Tommy Astone.

2001

Bruce Craig... Died ... He was a self-employed auto racing photographer, videographer, and historian who was well known throughout the United States. His photography collections on auto racing, numbering some 86,000 negatives, could be compared to those of Mathew Brady on the Civil War. In addition to taking photos he was very adept at acquiring outstanding collections. He was a member of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville, Iowa, and of the Williams Grove Oldtimers; an organization dedicated to preserving auto racing. He was a longtime and active member of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in Dillsburg, Pa. He was a member of numerous historic racing organizations.

Coming up:

Indoor TQ Midget racing and Senior Champ Kart racing returns to Providence, Rhode Island.  Info on this event can be found if you go here:  http://www.aarn.com/priindoorrace2009.html

Indoor Go-Kart racing returns to Syracuse on December 12th.  We always had a blast when we went up there to race.  From what I remember, the place is heated and ventilated.  A healthy amount of “Coke” syrup is put down on the track to help with traction, and man, does it help!  Up until two years ago, they had races in December and again in March, or thereabouts, but last year it was just the December date.  Looking at the new info, it looks like they’ll have that March date back again.  Info on the Syracuse indoor racing can be seen if you go here:  http://www.cnyroadrace.com/indoor/

News from Jayski:

Michael Waltrip Racing extends with Toyota: Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) announced the extension of its partnership with Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The new agreement will keep the emerging organization with the manufacturer through the end of 2012. In 2010, MWR will field the #00 Aaron's/Tums/Best Western Toyota full-time with driver David Reutimann, the #55 Toyota with Michael Waltrip on a limited basis and the #56 NAPA Auto Part Toyota full-time with Martin Truex Jr. Additionally, MWR signed a two-year technical alliance extension with JTG-Daugherty Racing to field the #47 Toyota with driver Marcos Ambrose. MWR receives engines from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) out of Costa Mesa, California, along with Red Bull Racing. TRD's Salisbury, N.C., facility supports MWR's vehicle dynamics and development, aerodynamics, tire data analysis and race strategy programs. This announcement comes on the heels of MWR announcing 100% renewal with its existing sponsors, a new relationship with TUMS as a primary and associate sponsor on the #00, a two-year extension with JTG-Daugherty Racing and a new partnership with its NASCAR Nationwide Series team with Gary and Blake Bechtel forming Diamond-Waltrip Racing to field Camrys for 18-year-old phenom Trevor Bayne.(MWR)(11-14-2009)

Note:  This is a no brainer – staying with Toyota.

Danica to JR Motorsports? Maybe Not: Dale Earnhardt Jr. says a deal to put Danica Patrick in his Nationwide Series car isn't imminent, and even if it were, JR Motorsports wouldn't necessarily have the funding for the IndyCar Series' most popular driver. Multiple media outlets have reported in recent weeks that Patrick was on the verge of signing with JRM for a part-time Nationwide schedule next season while continuing to run the Indy Racing League. Patrick and JRM share a sponsor in GoDaddy.com, but Earnhardt says it doesn't make the deal a cinch. "We've had a relationship with GoDaddy, so that makes us look like a nice fit, but they're moving (next year), so we don't really have it anymore," Earnhardt said after Sprint Cup practice Friday at Phoenix International Raceway. "We're having to search around." JRM's #88 Chevy currently driven by Brad Keselowski is sponsored by GoDaddy.com, but the company will move to Cup next year to back the #5 Chevy of Mark Martin at Hendrick Motorsports, which has an alliance with JRM. Earnhardt says JRM has only "three-quarters to half a season" of sponsors for the #88 in 2010. Earnhardt says the lack of funding is what's driving JRM's interest in Patrick, who also has been pursued by Roush Fenway Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing. Patrick also has met with Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing, and Earnhardt says he's talked to her along with Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. Patrick lives in the Phoenix area, but offseason sponsor commitments are expected to keep her from attending Sunday's Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500. "She's very interested in trying NASCAR, and a lot of people weren't sure whether she was serious or not, but she is serious," Earnhardt said. "There's a lot to learn there for her. She's got to get in the cars. She's got a lot of (stuff) to do before she ever takes the green flag for anything. But she's talked to a lot of people. I've spoken with her a couple of times just about the lifestyle and the difference in the series vs. what she does now." Besides GoDaddy, Patrick has sponsorship ties to Motorola's Boost Mobile brand and Tissot. Earnhardt believes she might be able to bring those companies to NASCAR, though without some TV advertising campaigns that could be considered risqué.(in part from the USA Today)(11-14-2009)

Note:  I have this feeling – if she ever does go to NASCAR, she won’t be able to cut it.

Note:  Well, according to this, it will not happen:  http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/nationwide/news/story?id=4657659

Brian France fights to keep case quiet: NASCAR chairman Brian France filed a civil complaint against his ex-wife, Megan France, last year, a few months after the couple divorced in Florida. They married in California in 2005. Lawyers persuaded Mecklenburg [County, NC] Judge Todd Owens to seal the court file from public inspection, an unusual move in a court system that typically allows widespread access to courtrooms and documents. On Friday, France's attorneys petitioned a Mecklenburg judge to bar the public from the courtroom as arguments in the case unfold. It's unclear exactly what the dispute involves, but the matter is being heard in family court and apparently involves domestic issues. France's attorneys argued Friday that a confidentiality agreement is at the heart of the case, and that it shouldn't be breached in open court hearings.(see full story at the Charlotte Observer)(11-14-2009)

Note:  Maybe it’s just as well.  Some things should be kept private, I suppose.

Last race for Jim Beam on the #7 car: Robby Gordon and the #7 team welcome Jim Beam back to the hood of Gordon's Toyota to mark the sponsor's final appearance in the five season partnership. In honor of Veteran's Day, Operation Homefront will serve as an associate sponsor. Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency and morale assistance to U.S. troops and their families. Robby's Remarks "Jim Beam has been a great partner for the past five years," said Robby Gordon. "I would like to thank them for their support through the years. They have been with me since we started the team in 2005, helping build our Cup team and aiding in its success. In the spring race at Phoenix, we had a really good car and had a great run going. Unfortunately we were ultimately caught up in an accident, which ruined our chances of a strong finish. Hopefully, we'll have a strong car this weekend that can bring home a great finish to show our appreciation and celebrate our partnership with Jim Beam." More info at robbygordon.com.(RGM)(11-14-2009)

Note:  I can see more and more sponsors dropping out, especially those that are “Start and park” cars.  Face it, if you ain’t on TV, what kind of exposure are you really giving your sponsors.

Robby down to 8 races in 2010?: #7-Robby Gordon, who has run a full Sprint Cup schedule as a driver/owner since 2006 [and before that was full time with RCR in the #31 car since mid 2001], says he has enough sponsorship for only eight races in 2010. "I'm looking at a lot of weekends off,'' a frustrated Gordon said Friday at Phoenix International Raceway. Gordon said he has two four-race commitments from sponsors for next season. One of his major sponsors, Jim Beam, announced earlier in the year that it would not return to the sport. "Nobody is spending money,'' Gordon said. "Everybody is cutting the fat out of everything. To be in racing you have to be a pretty big company.'' Gordon said many of the larger teams are making deals for well less than the market value because they can afford to, but that runs teams like his out of business. "It's sponsorship suicide,'' said Gordon, who is 34th in points. Gordon said NASCAR needs to create a unified marketing plan so every team is on a level playing field. He said there are so many different plans now that sponsors are confused. He expects to see more start-and-park teams next season than ever, adding he doesn't plan to be one. "I don't know what we're going to do,'' Gordon said. "We're going to continue to work hard to sell races through March of next year. After that I'm looking at a lot of weekends off.''(ESPN)(11-13-2009)

Note:  There are some things being said about Robby over on the Track Forum – about him and Indycar – some wishes from some of his fans.  I still think that if he had much better finishing places in 2009, he might have a better chance at landing some sponsors.

Sterling Marlin....retiring?: Sterling Marlin plans to enter Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway [Marlin is not on the entry list, but the #70 Chevy driver is listed as TBA-to be announced, so maybe.....] then, after over 30 years of life in the fast lane, will "probably" hang up his helmet. "Will I miss it? Yeah, in some ways," said Marlin, 52, who raced his way out of the Carter's Creek tobacco fields and into international fame with back-to-back Daytona 500 victories in '94 and '95. "But in some ways I'll kinda be glad when it's over. The sport has changed. It's not much fun any more."(Racin' Today)(11-17-2009)

Note:  Sterling has had quite a career.  I would imagine that there are still some Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fans out there that are happy to see this – especially those that still think that Sterling was the cause of Earnhardt’s last crash.

Former OVRP Dirt Oval runners:

At Penn Can, in the 600 Modifieds, Brad Szulewski finished in 3rd place, after starting 8th.  In the Crate Sportsman race, Kyle Rohner was 2nd and Anthony Perrego was 5th.

There are some pretty hot “rumors” out there that Billy VanInwegen will be running a Big Block Modified, along with some occasional runs with the CRSA 305 Sprint Cars in 2010.  The Modified to be raced at OCFS.  If things work out, they might hit the first races of the year at Volusia.

The History of the Sport:

From last week:

As many of you might know, I’m a member of the Yahoo! Race History Group – a group that really is more about the history of open wheel racing in this country.  A lot of subjects get mentioned, and at times, we all get a large amount of e-mails on some particular subjects.  Now, if you’re not a fan of open wheel racing – meaning Indy Cars, Sprint Cars and Midgets and the racing from “back in the day”, you might want to skip what follows.  What follows are comments, not necessarily in order, about some of the “memorable” Indy cars that ran in the 500.  I have eliminated names, where some of those that have posted might mention some – regarding other posters, that is.  Also, where necessary, made corrections to “typo’s”.

New for this week:

I have always been intrigued by the Cornelian which ran at Indy in 1915,
Louis Chevrolet driving. It weighed only 1,100 pounds, was a monocoque (I
think the first), had four wheel independent suspension and qualified at 81
mph. The car was powered by a Stirling engine. The Cornelian did not finish
the race due to engine problems. Nevertheless, this car introduced a lot of
firsts to Indy and racing in general.”

“How about the 1948 Iddings dirt car at Indy? 233cid Offy,
set fifth fastest time of the field on the last day of qualifications with a
rookie driver and finished seventh, after having to make six or seven pit
stops for fouled plugs. Not too bad for a 1938 Big Car.”

Note:  More individual race history will continue next week.

Other racin’ stuff:

In a way, I guess you can consider this as “racin’ stuff”:  Noted photographer Ralph Corwin has asked me to advertise that he is interested in selling some of his old negatives, from around 1975 on.  Ralph can be contacted, via phone at:  (845) 733-1787, or via e-mail at:  rcorwin@hvc.rr.com

More racin’ stuff:

I read, somewhere on the Internet, that there might be some changes to the modified bodies on the cars that run with DIRTcar.  Myself, I think they’ve gotten way to big and with the down force they now create, it has harmed today’s racing, rather than helping it.  I found this, below, on the South Jersey Dirt Racing’s message board:

http://theboard.southjerseydirtracing.com/DisplayMsg.asp?ForumID=27&Msgid=1187985&page=1

When is someone going to figure out that a lot of the problem with the cost of racing today is the wide bodies on these cars?. This all started when Kenny Weld brought the bat mobile to Syracuse and instead of telling him to take that monster home made every other car change there bodies to try to compete with him. Dirt racing has gone downhill since that day. We need to take the downforce out of racing by narrowing the bodies. All the motor in the world is no good if you can't hook it up. Racing was at it's best before thay widened the bodies. It's the cheapest way to make racing competative again. You should not have to have a 800 horsepower motor on a 1/2 mile track to be able to compete. Wide bodies are not the whole problem but they are a lot of it. Something has to be done for racing as we know it to continue.

I've been around for a long time and have seen it all. let's here some other suggestions to cut cost.

Note:  There are quite a few comments, some of which make some kind of sense.

As you might have read in some previous columns, I was gong to nominate Nofri (Nick) Fornoro, Sr. for induction into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.  Well, when I was at the Stan Lobitz affair a week ago, I had a little chat with Joe Fiore.  Mr. Fiore is one of the members of the HoF’s nominating committee.  He told me that Nick has already been nominated.  I inquired with the HoF to see if another nomination would be needed, and I was informed that it would not have to be.  So, who knows – maybe next year Nick will make it.

Other (non racing) news:

Medicare fraud?  Really?  Well, since it surely appears to be so, I can only imagine what will happen if we were to get some kind of government type of a medical program up and running – one that supposedly will be for not everyone, mind you , but for us lowly tax payers.  No way would any politician vote to put themselves and/or their families in the same program they’re trying to shove down our throats.  Wonder why?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091115/ap_on_bi_ge/us_medicare_fraud

We’re being told that most everything is looking better, today.  The economy is on an up swing.  Uh huh!  Well, quite a few times, in my columns in the past, I said that unemployment would get to be 10%.  It’s there now, and higher, really.  And the sad thing is that those that lost jobs, and might have been lucky enough to find some kind of “part time” are NOT included in that 10%.  I’m patiently waiting to see some sob stories from the auto industry about how their car sales have gone to pot.  It’s coming.  They tell us that there are less and  less being laid off throughout the country.  HELLO!!!  When you have a much smaller work force, it’s only natural that there will be fewer workers laid off, isn’t it?  Why don’t any of these newscasters come out and say that?

Home prices are lower now than what they were a few years back, but with this new program (it has been extended) that gives new homebuyers a nice dollar savings, it’s being reported that home sales are slightly up.

The extension:  Congress approved legislation that extends the $8,000 credit for first-time homebuyers through April 30, 2010, and creates a $6,500 credit toward a new home purchase for existing homeowners who've lived in their home for at least five years. The existing credit was set to expire Nov. 30. The extension was part of a bill that also extends unemployment benefits for 20 more weeks for states with high jobless rates, including New York.

Will this program have to be continually extended?  And, might there be some hidden way where tho0se “savings” might just somehow end up being taxed?

Home sales are up a little, but commercial properties are hurting, and that will only lead to bigger problems, down the road.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091115/ts_afp/financeeconomyuspropertycommercial

And this, about the extension on the credit for homebuyers:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091117/bs_nm/us_usa_housing_taxcredit

$98 billion wasted.  Ya know, this stuff has got to come to a stop, and quickly, too!

Closing with this:

Many times we get e-mails that tell us how we can straighten out the mess our country is in.  You’ve had them in your mailbox, for sure.  Like the one about the leader of Australia, and what he has to say about those in Australia that are not citizens.  Well, below is another e-mail I received (a few exactly like this one – same thing) so I figured I’d copy it, change the “type” a little, and then paste it into this week’s column.  Who actually knows whether Robin Williams actually is responsible for what follows?  Of course the leaders of our country would never think of doing what’s below!

You gotta love Robin Williams........Even if he's nuts! Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message.
Robin Williams' plan...(Hard to argue with this logic!)

'I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan.'

1) 'The US,UK ,CANADA and AUSTRALIA will apologize to the world for our 'interference' in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those 'good 'ole' boys', we will never 'interfere' again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting withGermany , South Korea , the Middle East , and the Philippines . They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence.

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are from. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.

4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

5) No foreign 'students' over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a 'D' and it's back home baby.

6) The US,UK ,CANADA and AUSTRALIA will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not 'interfere.' They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN  Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us 'Ugly Americans' any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH..learn it...or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?

'The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'you want a piece of me?' '

If you agree with the above, forward it to friends...If not, and I would be amazed if you DELETED it!!
