Racin' Stuff:

By Tom Avenengo

First things, first:

Hmmm, where to start this week.  What the hey, might as well start with what’s been going on at OCFS.  After the fiasco last Wednesday night, with the early Fourth of July “Fireworks” behind the ½ covered grand stands, the track was shut down for further racing until whatever problems that were found, get corrected.

Here is a link to what was in our local (Middletown) paper, on June 19th:

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090619/SPORTS/90619045

As of this past Monday night, it looks like things are or have been taken care of, per this:

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090623/SPORTS/906230339/-1/SPORTS02

Update:

Well, I had heard, late on Wednesday, that due to the poles getting there late, the work will not be done in a timely and satisfactory manner, so for this Saturday night, it sure looks like it is a no go.  Yeah, and the weather forecast looked good, too.

Going back, in time:

Note:  I found one event that was held on June 25th in 1967 that I was rather surprised to see – a sprint car club here in the east that supposedly run out in California!  Check below, on the year 1967 to see what happened.

On June 25th, in:

1950:

Jack McGrath won the 100 mile AAA Championship race on the 1 Mile Dirt Oval Langhorne Speedway, Langhorne, PA. Henry Banks was second followed by Chuck Stevenson, Duke Dinsmore and Duke Nalon.

Troy Ruttman won the AAA Sprint Car race at the Dayton Speedway, Dayton, OH.

1954:

Art Cross won the AAA Midget race at the Blue Island, Chicago, IL.

1955:

Eddie Sachs won the AAA Midget race at the Indianapolis Speedrome, Indianapolis,IN.

1960:

Tony Romit won the ARDC Midget race at the Danbury Fairgrounds, Danbury,CT.

Bob Mathouser won the CRA Sprint Car race at the Riverside International Raceway, Riverside,CA.

Note:  Yes, even sprint cars ran on road courses back in "the day".

1961:

Johnny Mackison won the Super Modified race at the Susquehanna Speedway, Newberrytown,PA. Bobby Hersh was second followed by Leroy Felty, Ray Kable and Bud Folkenroth.

Bill Randall won the ARDC Midget race at the Thompson Int. Speedway, Thompson, CT.

1965:

Dave Lundy won the Sprint Car race over Bob Burris, Dick Bailey, Steve Ungar and Gus Linder at the Greater Pittsburgh Speedway, Pittsburgh,PA.

Ernie McCoy won the ARDC Midget race at the Hatfield Speedway, Hatfield,PA.

1966:

Bob Smith won the Super Modified race over Nolan Swift, Bentley Warren, Todd Gibson and Norm Mackereth at the Oswego Speedway, Oswego,NY.

Note:  Isn’t Bentley still racing?

1967:

Jerry Wall won the ARDC Midget race at the Nazareth Raceway, Nazareth,PA. Ray Brown was second followed by Bill Brown, Sonny Saunders and Don Kreitz.

Jerry Karl won the URC Sprint Car race over Joe Csiki, Tom Price, Lou Johnson and Bob Wilkey at the Whiteman Stadium, Pacoima,CA.

Note # 1:  I found the above to be quite interesting – the URC, from here on the east coast, having a race out in California!  OK, I found it hard to believe, so I did some asking around.  That race is not shown in the URC’s history section on their website, as pointed out to me by Ron Lauer, former President of the ARDC.

Note # 2:  I come to find out that I found a “typo” error on the website I frequent for this info.  I inquired with them, and I received a couple of responses, which were:

Hi Tom,

Thanks for contacting us about the history section of our website!

It appears that you've caught an error. I'll have my dad look into it as he's the expert with that stuff (I think he has the URC history book). I believe the event is correct but the location appears to be a cut-and-paste mistake. Hopefully we can get that corrected and the right info back to you shortly.

Your column looks great!

Thanks again and take care,
John

Tom,
Thanks for catching the typo. Don't know where the California track came from. I fixed the information it should be the Windber Stadium Speedway, Windber, PA.

The race results came from http://www.openwheeltimes.com/

When I started the history section it was one of many of my sources . I now use old racing papers. I still have a stack of over 6 feet tall of old papers that I have yet to go over for information and results.

Thanks for checking out our site and if you have any more information of history results that look bad please let us know. We also want the information to be correct, thats why we now only use old race papers for our information.

Note # 3:  They work fast!  It has now been corrected to read:

Jerry Karl won the URC Sprint Car race over Joe Csiki, Tom Price, Lou Johnson and Bob Wilkey at the Windber Stadium Speedway, Windber,PA.

1971:

Jan Opperman won the Super Sprint Car race at the Williams Grove Speedway, Mechanicsburg, PA.

Bobby Gerhart won the Modified Stock Car race at the Reading Fairgrounds, Reading, PA

1978:

Al Unser won the Schaefer 500 USAC Championship race on the 2.5 Mile Paved Oval Pocono International Raceway, Long Pond, PA. Johnny Rutherford was second followed by Tom Sneva, Wally Dallenbach and Larry Dickson.

1996:

On June 25, 1996, there was a Syracuse qualifier at the Accord Speedway.  I was there that night.  The race was won by Danny Johnson.  Most of you know that I’m not a real fan of Danny, however, he has impressed me the times I’ve seen him at Accord this year, and also at the Valley and OCFS last week.  That date, back then, was a Tuesday.  I was scheduled to go to the Valley Hospital, in Ridgewood, NJ the next day, June 26th, for what I was led to believe would be a simple “test”.  As we (my son, Eric, drove me there) were walking along the sidewalk, I “littered” the area next to it with what was going to turn out to be the very last cigarette that I would ever smoke.  After the “test”, a doctor asked me what I did for a living.  When I informed him that I was a Produce Manager and Produce man for the Grand Union Company, well, he told me that I wouldn’t be doing that anymore.  I think he told me what would happen in two more days (five arteries by-passed), but for some unknown reasons, the next ten days or so didn’t really register in this old brain of mine.  I only knew that I was going to pull through because there was no way that God would have Danny Johnson win the last race I might have seen!

Oh yes, before I forget – June 26th is the date that noted race photographer, and close friend of mine, Ralph Corwin was born on.  I’m not positive as to what year he was born, I just know that Ralph is “getting up there” and is joining us other “old pharts”, age wise.  Happy Birthday “L-1”!!

Coming up in the near future:

Got this one in an e-mail the other day, about July 8th:

What is so different about

the 8th of July this year?

At five minutes and six seconds after 4 AM on

the 8th of July this year, the time and date will be

 04:05:06 07/08/09.

This will never happen again.

I see fireworks are on tap for Accord, Penn Can and Stafford on Friday night, July 3rd and for OCFS, Five Mile Point and Lebanon Valley on the 4th.  On July 10th, the ARDC midgets are scheduled for Accord.  On August 1st, the CRSA is scheduled to return to OCFS and run their feature ONLY from the rained out July 13th event.  They then return for a regular show on August 15th.  July 11th finds “Nostalgia” night at OCFS with quite a few drivers from days gone bye in attendance.  Also at OC on the 11th the restored racecars of the Atlantic Coast Old Timers (ACOT) will be in attendance, plus the Vintage modifieds.  ACOT is also scheduled to be at Accord on Friday, July 10th.

Note:  There might be a slight change to something that I have, above.  If so, I should know by next week.

Coming up – in the distant future:

On the OCFS website, in the entry forms for Eastern States Weekend, they have the following classes listed:  Big Block Modified, Small Block Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock, Pure Stock and 305 Sprint Cars.

My thoughts:

This season, OCFS has gone independent.  Just what that might result in entrants for ESW remains to be seen.  With the exception of Accord, most every track in the area is sanctioned by DIRTcar.  Unless something drastic changes, in my way of thinking, the track tire (American Racer) would have to be used at OC for ESW.  That might keep some modified and small block modifieds away, along with some sportsman cars.  In the sportsman class, if you run at a DIRTcar sanctioned track, a “Crate” engine is mandatory.  At OCFS, it isn’t.  If you run an “open” motor in the sportsman class, you must use steel wheels and weigh in at 2550.  If you use a crate engine, you can weigh in at 2350, and aluminum wheel are optional.  Maybe that 200 pound break for crate powered cars might see some of the DIRTcar guys enter.   Time will tell, for sure.

As for the 305 Sprint Cars – things are still in the works, and it might very well be a Friday/Saturday – two-day deal, for them.  Again, time will tell.

At this time, there really isn’t much info coming out of OC as to how many laps the features will be.  I can see the modifieds still at 200.  As for the Small Blocks, well, they (DIRTcar) did shorten the race from what was 150 laps down to 100.  Maybe back to 150?  It would be nice to see a return of the “Barbara and Neil Luce Memorial” race for the Sportsman, at ESW – something else that has gone by the wayside.

Racing on TV:

Check out what’s on TV, racing wise, here:  http://www.racefantv.com/USTV.htm

If you’re an Indy car fan, they will be at Richmond this coming Saturday night.  They will be on the Versus channel from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM – live.  I do believe that Richmond, at ¾ mile is the smallest track for the IRL.  As some have described it – “It’s like flying jet fighter planes in a gymnasium”.  Look for plenty of action – similar to the mini demo derby - that they had at Iowa last week.

Other forums/message boards and websites:

From the Track Forum - http://www.trackforum.com/forums/

Did you watch the Cup race from California on Sunday?  That is about the only kind of road racing this writer likes, anymore.  The drivers actually have to shift, brake and get back on it – not like Indycar or F-1.  However, leave it to me to have a complaint – and I’m not the only one it seems.  My complaint:  Full course yellows on a road course when there is a minor spin.  When I attached the link, below, on Monday at around 1:00 PM, there had already been 15 responses about full course yellows and the amount of time it takes to remove a car.  By 4:00 PM on Wednesday, it’s up to 43 posts.  Check it out, here:

Doing away with the Truck Series?  Well, someone has started a thread on this on the TF.  Interested?  Check it out, here:

http://www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125167

There was a short thread about the midget race at Iowa Speedway – the same track that the Indycar race was held on, this past Sunday.  Brad Kuhn was the top qualifier with a time of 23.113 for the 7/8 mile oval.  I thought I’d go to my “How to figure out MPH” page and I find out that Brad averaged 136.28 MPH.  I wonder what his top speed was?

If you’re interested in how they timed and how they finished – a young man from New England won it, check it out, here:

http://www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125001

Note:  In case you want to figure out your MPH for a lap at your track, or any track, below is one way of doing it.  You just have to convert the track distance from miles to feet.

To figure out your average speed:

Track distance: 1/4 mile – 1320’  1/5 mile – 1056’

divided by time

X 3600

divided by 5280

example:  1056 divided by 14.85 = 71.11111111

X 3600 = 256000

divided by 5280 = 48.48 MPH

I do believe there are also other formulas for figuring out speed, too.

Toyota to leave Nationwide and Truck Series? UPDATE: Toyota appears ready to withdraw its financial support of NASCAR Truck and Nationwide teams, though continuing engineering support, in the wake of General Motors' decision to join Ford and Chrysler in withdrawing all but engineering support for those two NASCAR tours. There has been no specific comment on that yet from Toyota executives.(MikeMulhern.net)(6-22-2009)
UPDATE: Word in the Infineon Raceway garage over the week was that Toyota has decided to follow its three corporate rivals and pull all but engineering and technical support and parts supplies from the two NASCAR tours. Lee White, head of Toyota' racing development operations: "Toyota and TRD have been in the process for over a year, of adapting our series support for the Truck/Nationwide programs to be appropriate to the value of each series. Our process in the future will not be determined by other manufacturer's actions but by the value delivered by each series. At this point there is no plan to change our involvement for the remainder of this season. As always we will re evaluate each series over the winter and could make appropriate adjustments."(MikeMulhern.net)(6-22-2009)

Note:  In a way, I’m kind of surprised on this from Toyota.  Then again, check out a link I have, below, in the “Track Forum” section about the Truck Series.  Time will tell, I suppose.

Spec Engines for NNS/Trucks? Detroit's NASCAR people are talking with NASCAR officials about a new 'spec' engine ('crate' engine) program for the Truck and Nationwide series, which could be supplied by a 'consortium' of engineers from the four NASCAR car makers, Toyota, Ford, Dodge and Chevry. However NASCAR executives have so far shown little interest in such a program. According to one Detroit executive, such a 'spec' engine program could provide competitive Truck and Nationwide engines to a team for perhaps as little as $600,000 for the season.(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009)

Note:  Hmm, interesting, for sure.  I can’t see it happening, though.  Again, check out the thread below in the TF section on Trucks.

Kahne to Toyota? by Chicago? UPDATE: Speculation is increasing that Dodge driver #9-Kasey Kahne, who runs for Richard Petty, could switch to a Toyota by the July 11th Sprint Cup race at Chicago. Petty has said that Chrysler has cut its payments to his four-car operation, and apparently Petty has only enough engine parts for one of the new Dodge NASCAR engines. Petty's business partner, George Gillett, tried last season to make a deal with Toyota. There is no immediate comment from Toyota officials.(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009)
UPDATE: And speculation that Richard Petty and Kasey Kahne could switch to Toyotas as soon as July? Lee White, head of Toyota' racing development operations, says "I've never talked to the King or his driver. I'm pretty sure that no one at Toyota/TRD has talked to either of them."(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009)

UPDATE 4: sources inside the walls at RPM say plans have been made to field Toyota Camrys for Kasey Kahne beginning in mid-August, as soon as team officials finalize a financial settlement package with Dodge. Those negotiations have reportedly taken a sudden turn in recent days, though, with the possibility now existing for Kahne and his RPM teammates to remain in the Dodge camp, after all.(Sirius Speedway)(6-23-2009)

Note:  Hey, one never knows until one sees those headlight decals, right?

How much does GM pay to teams? While no one is saying how much General Motors is cutting its financial support from teams, at least one court document puts a price tag on it. Try $2,538,750. And that's to one Cup team. A court document [click to view pdf] shows that GM was to have paid RCR Enterprises, LLC (i.e. Richard Childress Racing) that amount on June 15. Childress spoke Friday at Infineon Raceway about the GM situation. Asked if he received his June 15 payment from GM, Childress said: "That's kind of personal. I didn't ask you if you got your paycheck this week.'' If nothing else, that gives you a sense of some of the money that's out there and involved in this sport. Childress would not reveal what kind of cutbacks GM is making with his team. Asked if he would have to lay anyone off, Childress said: "I don't know really what all is going to happen. We're going to have to make cuts like everybody in the sport or in business. We don't want to cut performance. For sure, we're not going to cut performance. We'll cut a lot of other things before that.''(Virginian-Pilot)(6-20-2009)

Note:  Not only has GM, Chrysler and Toyota cut back, but I wonder just how many team owners also have many car dealerships, and have been hurt by them also being closed?

From Tuesday:

RCR to scale back to two teams? UPDATE - Statement: There is speculation that Chevy team owner Richard Childress may have to cut back to a two-car operation next season, if the Shell [#29-Harvick] and Jack Daniels [#07-Casey Mears] sponsorships are not renewed. Childress says he intends to have four Cup teams again next year, but conceded sponsorship issues remain to be resolved. Childress, through the Winston-Salem law firm Womble, Carlyle, has filed legal papers over what he says is GM's non-payment of a bill of $2,538,750. Childress insists he's not suing GM over its failure to make that payment due June 15th. That bill would apparently be a scheduled quarterly payment, part of a $10 million a year Chevrolet sponsorship for Childress' four-team operation.(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009) UPDATE: The following is a statement from Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing regarding allegations that RCR has filed a lawsuit against General Motors: “I would like to set the record straight that RCR has NOT filed a lawsuit against General Motors and I do not appreciate anyone suggesting otherwise. As is standard practice in bankruptcy proceedings, RCR has made a filing which is common among creditors in these situations. As previously stated as recently as this past weekend in Sonoma, RCR is proud to be associated with General Motors and we are working closely with them during these difficult economic times.”(RCR)(6-23-2009)

UPDATE 3 - denied:  (On Kasey Kahne): Been told by sources within Richard Petty Motorsports that there are no plans to switch manufacturers with any of their Sprint Cups teams in 2009.(6-23-2009)
UPDATE 4: sources inside the walls at RPM say plans have been made to field Toyota Camrys for Kasey Kahne beginning in mid-August, as soon as team officials finalize a financial settlement package with Dodge. Those negotiations have reportedly taken a sudden turn in recent days, though, with the possibility now existing for Kahne and his RPM teammates to remain in the Dodge camp, after all.(Sirius Speedway)(6-23-2009)

Note:  Can this be just the tip of the iceberg as far as race teams having financial problems.  Just how big might this get to be?

EGR to Toyota? Once #1-Martin Truex Jr. announces that he's driving for Michael Waltrip Racing next month, where does that leave Earnhardt Ganassi Racing? With #42-Juan Pablo Montoya. But after GM dramatically reduced its assistance to EGR last week, is now the time that Chip Ganassi bolts to Toyota? One hot rumor swirling around the garage was a partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing to run Montoya in a fourth car similar to the situation that Marcos Ambrose has with MWR. On Sunday, JGR president J.D. Gibbs said, "No, no, no...," but the guess is his bottom line could say "yes".(FoxSports)(6-23-2009)

Note:  As I’ve said, above, on a few occasions – time will tell.  Check out those headlight decals.

From Wednesday:

"The King" dicusses Toyota rumors: Tuesday, June 23rd on “Sirius Speedway” on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, host Dave Moody spoke with NASCAR legend Richard Petty. Petty was asked about the rumors that Richard Petty Motorsports driver Kasey Kahne might be switching from a Dodge to a Toyota.
Host, Dave Moody: “Lot of rumors swirling around about Kasey Kahne and a possible affiliation with Toyota, on again, off again, conversations that may or may not be happening. What can you tell us on that, if anything?”
Richard Petty: “Exactly what you just said. That’s how much I know about it, too. It’s all swirling around. You grab some of it. I don’t really know, okay? And I don’t think anybody knows right now exactly where we’re sitting, what we’re gonna do, what’s gonna happen, you know, three weeks from now let alone the beginning of next year. We’re like everybody else. We’re trying to put ourselves together with our sponsor deals, make sure we’ve got monetary deals to be able to go do the deal. Then we’re going to look at whatever we think is going to be the best for Richard Petty Motorsports in the short run and the long run. Because after being here for 50 or 60 years anyway I’m not looking for a quick fix, okay? We’re trying to put stuff together so that we can go on down the road next year, the year after next, the year after that. What happens? I don’t know. We’re open about anything right now to look at. So we’re going to put everything on the table and then we’re going to say, ‘Okay, this happens and that happens and this over here happens.’ Then we hope we’ll make the right decisions on where we go. Other than that, that’s about all I know about it.”
Moody: “I know you’ve been fiercely loyal to Dodge over the years but at the end of the day loyalty doesn’t feed the dog, does it?”
Petty: “Well, you’ve got to look at it from the standpoint that can Dodge be loyal to us now that the government owns Chrysler, okay, or whoever owns it? So I don’t know if the people that are head of what’s going on right now, are they race fans? If they are then that’s going to be great. But if they’re not then, you know, it affects so many people and there’s so much going on out there, under the table deal or under the ground, that we don’t know about. So what Dodge does next year or what Chevrolet does or what Ford does or Toyota or whoever, we’re just going to have to sort of wait and let things sort of let the dust settle and then we’re going to run in there and pick up the best thing we can.”
Moody: “Would it be even theoretically feasible to field two different brands of race cars out of the same race shop? Could that be done?”
Petty: “You know, I’ve asked the same question. (laughs) Really, I have. I said, ‘What if?’ And I think that’s what we’re gonna have to do. We’re gonna have to say, ‘What if?’ and then see if it’s done and what would it be to be able to do something like that. The problem I see with running two different kinds of cars out of the same shop is basically the engine shop. The cars have got the same wheels, same brakes, same chassis, same basic body so all that stuff would be easy. The big deal was how could you do the motor situation? That would be the big question mark. I don’t know if it’s ever been done but if it could be done we could probably do it.”
“SIRIUS Speedway” airs every weekday (3-7 pm ET) exclusively on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio.(SIRIUS
XM Radio)(6-24-2009)

Note:  Again, watch those headlight decals.

Infineon TV ratings drop: TNT’s coverage of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Infineon Raceway earned a 4.0 cable rating, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating is 7.0% lower than the 4.3 cable rating TNT earned for the 2008 race. This year’s race averaged 5.788 million viewers, down 3.8% from last year’s 6.015 million viewers. For its first three Sprint Cup races this season, TNT is averaging a 3.9 cable rating and 5.483 million viewers, down 9.3% and 5.1%, respectively, from the 4.3 rating and 5.780 million viewers last year, the Daily reports.(SceneDaily), see race-by-race and more TV Ratings news on my 2009 TV Ratings page.(6-24-2009)

Note:  Nothing new here.  Supposedly all those “millions” of fans that NASCAR claims it has, either don’t watch the races on TV, don’t have TV’s, or got messed up in this “digital TV” switcheroo.  I know that when the race came on in my area, we watched a good portion of it from our dining room table.

Check out the forum!  Lotsa stuff on it!

OCFS - http://www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net/

Racing at OCFS this past weekend was cancelled – not because of the weather forecast, but because the state said so.  Why it was is mentioned at the very beginning of this column.

As of Monday, June 22nd, it appears that the problem/problems (?) have been taken care of enough to let them race there this coming Saturday.

As for the offer of $4.00 off (with orange wrist bands) from the “Big Show” night, I’ve been told that yes, it will be in effect but only for the drive-in section and the grandstands.  Not in the pits.  Also, this coming Saturday is billed as “Graduation Night”

And, again, from above, at the beginning of this column:

“Well, I had heard, late on Wednesday, that due to the poles getting there late, the work will not be done in a timely and satisfactory manner, so for this Saturday night, it sure looks like it is a no go.  Yeah, and the weather forecast looked good, too.”  The Press Release is also posted, above.

Bethel Motor Speedway:  http://www.bethelmotorspeedway.com/BethelMotorSpeedway/HomePage.html

“Mother Nature” took care of racing at Bethel this past Saturday.  Did you know it only cost five bucks to get into Bethel?

Hamlin Speedway:  http://www.hamlinspeedway.com/

Like Bethel, “Mother Nature” was the weeks winner.  Hamlin has a $1,500.00 to win 100 lap Slingshot race coming up on Saturday, July 4th, and $700.00 to win for the 600 Micro Sprints on the 18th of July (if 24 cars sign up).  With Ryan Smith competing in the Silver Crown race down in Richmond, Va, this weekend, along with his father, Randy, Hamlin is closed this coming Saturday.

Accord - http://www.accordspeedway.com/

You got it!  “Mother Nature” won another one last Friday night at the “Big A”.  Fireworks are scheduled for July 3rd – the kind that go up into the sky, that is.  More than likely, there’ll be fireworks on the track, too!

OVRP’s Dirt Oval - http://www.ovrpdirtoval.com/

Like those tracks, above, the Dirt Oval also got rained out this past weekend.  What hurts is that they will be closed this coming Saturday and also on July 4th – more than likely to satisfy the town and their requirement of at least one “quiet” weekend a month.  But to do two weeks in a row?  Then again, how were they to know what the weather was going to be.  At OVRP, they race on the road course on Saturday and also on most Sundays, too.  Would it be beneficial for the Dirt Oval to use Sunday as a rain date for Saturdays?

Former OVRP Dirt Oval runners:

Last week, I neglected to put in that RJ Tufano was 6th in the 1200 Mini Sprint feature up at Whip City.

Up at Stafford last Friday night, David Webb was 6th in the SK Light feature.

At Penn Can, in the modifieds, Danny Creeden was a DNQ.  In the sportsman feature, Nick Pecko was 6th and Brian Krummel 7th.

At Utica/Rome, AJ Filbeck was 11th in the sportsman feature.

The CRSA 305 sprinters ran up at Albany/Saratoga and Billy VanInwegen, Jr. was 7th.  Chuck Alessi was 17th and Benny Rizzo was 18th.

Up in Canada, at Cornwall, in the Tobias SpeedSTR feature, Billy VanInwegen was 3rd and Jeff Gallup 5th.   Most of the names in the race results I found were Canadian.  I still have concerns about this series and what I would consider very low car counts.

At Five Mile Point this past Tuesday, in the RoC Sportsman feature, Anthony Perrego was 13th and Mike Ruggiero 24th.  I believe Nick Pecko went there, but since he’s not listed in the feature results, I imagine he was a DNQ.

Family members in racing:

With the rain this past weekend, our Micro Sprint spend a lonely Saturday night in the garage.  Next weekend, our driver will graduate from high school, so it looks like another quiet weekend for the racecar.  What the following weekend holds is anyone’s guess right now – Hamlin (wingless) or Greenwood Valley Action Track (with wing).  We’d love to get Brett into one of the CRSA’s 305 sprint cars – for sure.

As for grandson John, he returned to Florida this past weekend.  So, I imagine he’ll be back racing at the Charlotte County Motor Sports Park.  While I’ve looked at the results from down there, I notice that one Jack Duffy has been winning some TQ races there.  Jack, for your information, is older than this writer, and I’ll hit 72 in September.

Other racin’ stuff:

This past Sunday, we caught a few glimpses of the Formula One race from England.  To be perfectly honest, I’ve gotten away from F-1 due to all the technology that has replaced the driver in the cockpit.  But there was something quite interesting and that was how they change tires on a pit stop.  Damn if it doesn’t look like they take a TIRE off and put another on – no wheel, just a tire!  I requested info on this over on the Track Forum.  There were some responses, and even a link to pit stop videos, but the pit stops shown, even from 2009, didn’t look anything like what we saw last Sunday.

I see that out of the 46 entrants for the Cup race this coming weekend at Loudon, noted modified star, Ted Christopher is one of them, in a car # 27, entered by Kirk Shelmerdine.

The asphalt NASCAR modifieds run up there, too, and I imagine in time, their race might make TV.  I believe that the modifieds are restricted.  Even so, I think they’re as fast as the Cup cars.

More racin’ stuff:

The other day, on the pre-race NASCAR show, Alan Bestwick happened to make mention of how much NASCAR goes and does as far as “protecting” pit crew members, safety wise.  Of course I cursed at the TV, asking why the h*ll do they allow upwards of 43 cars to pit at once, then, when there’s a yellow early in a race?  I’m completely in favor of no pitting under yellow, unless you are the one that cause the yellow.

I also think that the double file re-starts (this is NOT a NASCAR idea, folks, believe me!) should include the lapped cars in position as they were on the track – if there were a couple of cars between them and the leader, that should also be the case when the green comes back out.   As an example – during the “Big Show” at OCFS a week ago, just prior to it being checkered on lap 59, the cars were running under yellow.  Billy Decker was leading.  Danny Johnson was 2nd.  There were 6 cars between them.  Billy worked hard to lap those cars.  Danny, or anyone else that could have been second, should also have had to work hard to get those cars a lap down.   And please, don’t get me going on that ridiculous “Lucky dog” cr*p.

Bill Wimble:

Are/were you a fan of Bill Wimble – the “Dirt poor dairy farmer who went on to be a NASCAR National Champion”?  Well, if so, you’re in for a treat!  Bill sat down with Lew Boyd from Coastal 181, and the book, “I’ll Never Be Last Again”, is the end result.

The book will be released at a book-signing event at the Utica-Rome Speedway on July 22, 2009.

The History of the Sport:

The problem that arose up above in my “Going back, in time” section, about the URC and California, I decided to check into the history of the URC.  Rather than leave anyone out in the listings they have, I’ve chosen to supply the link to a section of their history.  Quite interesting, in some places, to say the least:

Video time:

Champ (Silver Crown) cars at Springfield, Illinois from 1970 is the video I chose this week.  Really not much in the way of racing action in the almost 10 minute video.  But in the thread, there are some pretty nice comments, and here is one of them:

This particular race was delayed by rain (and then mud) for quite some time. ABC's Wide World of Sports covered the race live. They even spent time showing A.J. Foyt driving a road grader to help smooth out the track. In those days the starting field on dirt tracks was limited to 18 cars and just qualifying was tough. Because of the rain every car that showed up got to race (28 cars) and the field was simply determined by a draw for position. That's how Larry Dickson got on the pole that day. The entire field took the green flag without a single lap of practice. What's even more amazing is that more people watched this race on television that day than have ever watched an IRL race outside of the Indianapolis 500. In fact, more people in America probably watched this race than watched this year's 500 what with the lower ratings now. Yes, I know that cable television wasn't yet around but it's hard for new fans to understand how low the interest in Indianapolis type racing is today compared to the past. Also, ABC-TV cancelled their other programs that day and ran over for nearly two hours in order to show this race live. That's how important they thought the race was then. Can you imagine that ever happening today for an IRL race?”

Other (non racing) news:

In my local paper this past Monday, there was an article about how some of the local car dealers feel about being “let go” by the manufacturers.  Rather interesting.  Might the same apply to new car dealers in your area?

Do you have a pet?  We do.  His name is Max.  He’s a Shih Tzu.  Lovable little fella, he is.  But there are some animals out there that are in need of help, along with the people that help them.  Check this out, please:

The Animal Rescue Site

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Please pass it along to at least ten people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/

AGAIN, PLEASE TELL 10 FRIENDS!

Thanks!

Note:  The above was sent to Pete Kessler, from an old friend, Elaine Allen, so he could post it on his Victory Speedway message board.

Closing with this:

Something VERY different, this week, folks:

I’ve received a few e-mails lately that have had this, below.  Maybe you have too?

YOU MAY have seen this before, but it demonstrates just how badly disconnected Washington really is.

Lets, say I break into your house,

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials
in ages!!! It explains things better than all
the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place
across the country protesting the fact that Congress
is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that
the US might protect its own
borders, might make it harder
to sneak into this country and,
once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand
the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover
me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, 'No! I like it here.
It's better than my house. I've made all
the beds and washed the
dishes and did the laundry
and swept the floors. I've
done all the things you don't
like to do. I'm hard-working
and honest

(except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house

You are Required to feed me
You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
You are Required to Educate my kids
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family

My husband will do all of your yard work because
he is also hard-working and honest. (except for that breaking in part).

cid:image022.jpg@01C83E85.DA5E8860
If you try to call the police or force me out,
I will call my friends who will picket your
house carrying signs that proclaim my

RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have
a nicer house than I do, and I'm just
trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working
and honest, person, except for well,
you know, I did break into your house

And what a deal it is for me!!!

I live in your house, contributing only a
fraction of the cost of my keep, and
there is nothing you can do about it
without being accused of cold,

uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and
bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, and I DEMAND that you learn
MY LANGUAGE!!! so that you can
communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous
this is?!  America is governed by idiots.

If you agree, pass it on (in English).

If not blow it off.........
along with your future Social Security funds and a lot of the former benefits of being an American Citizen

I should add this, from what was to be my April 8, 2009 column – one that should have appeared on http://www.openwheelracers.com/, but unfortunately, that website stopped publication on April 7th.  In a way, it has something to do with the above “Breaking into your house”.

I’m not exactly sure how I got this info, but anyhow, here it is:

 THREE PRESIDENTS

HOOVER, TRUMAN AND EISENHOWER
Here is something that should be of great interest for you to pass around.

I didn't know of this until it was pointed out to me. But, back during The Great Depression,
President
Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order
To make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed
work.

Harry Truman deported over two million Illegal's after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.

And then again in 1954, President

Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million Mexican nationals! The program was called 'Operation Wetback' so that American WWII and Korean veterans had a better chance at jobs. It took 2 Years, but they deported them!

Now, if they could deport the illegal's back then, they can sure do it today!! If you have doubts about the veracity of this information, enter Operation Wetback into your favorite search engine and confirm it for yourself.”

Oh – I did check out “Operation Wetback”.  It confirms what is said, above.

May “Guardian Angels” sit on the shoulders of all of our race drivers and guide them safely around the tracks!

Drive safe!
