Racin' Stuff:

                                                                                 By Tom Avenengo

First things, first:

A little history on me, and some good news in this section, this week.  It was back in November of 2001 when I first started this writing stuff.  The late Lenny Calinoff who had the website www.openwheelracing.com talked me into writing for him.  He had some assistance in talking me into writing by the late John LeVan.  When Lenny passed away, John took the website over.  Failure to keep the original OWR up and running by another party, led John to create www.openwheelracers.com.  John passed away this past December, and his son, Craig, took over.  Some problems came up and on April 7th, OWR “froze” up.  Craig attempted to get it going to no avail.  He then attempted to create a new website with .net rather than .com.  Weirdly, nothing could be posted on that site either.  On August 1st, I believe it was, OWR ceased to be a website.

Since I was closest to John, a lot of people had asked me if I’d be interested in taking over the website, or maybe starting up a new one.  To be honest, although I might have done it were I somewhat younger, and more computer savvy, I probably would have.  But not being the best as far as knowing this computer stuff, and with me having major problems with my computer for some time (looks like they’ve been solved, thanks to my son-in-law Jeff Michelson), I felt it best to have someone else attempt to start up a new website, or continue the old one.

The good news:

Enter Dennis “aXe” Sylvia.  Dennis was one of those that attempted to talk me into what I said, above.  How others responded to him, if they were asked, I have no idea.  But Dennis, who also truly loves auto racing – mostly Open Wheel racing, has decided to take the job on, and in an e-mail from him a few days ago, he sent me this link:  http://www.openwheelracers3.com/

Slowly, things are being added to the new website!

Thank you, “aXe”!

Some of my thoughts:

While watching the telecast of the rained out Cup race at Watkins Glen this past Sunday, one of the announcers was saying how the teams have “special” cars for the road courses.  Huh?  Damn!  I was under the impression that the CoT cars were designed so that a team could use the SAME car on different tracks, thus saving the teams a bundle of money.  What happened to that?

I have no idea as to what has happened to David Stremme lately, but is there anything he hasn’t hit on the track these last few Cup races?

I hit two tracks this past weekend – Accord on Friday night and OCFS on Saturday.  To me, it’s a shame to see only 12 cars entered in the Pro Stock class at OCFS.  That used to be quite a lot larger in days long ago.  What happened?

Also, at OCFS, during the Pure Stock feature, a car got on it’s roof after an altercation coming out of the second turn.  There was an immediate red flag.  However, when that red flag came out, there was a car entering the first turn.  Yep, you guessed it – that car actually hit the overturned car that was on the backstretch.  Unbelievable!  I’ve been under the impression that when the red flag/light comes on, you are supposed to stop ASAP – of course keeping safety in mind.

Accord, as usual had a lot of side-by-side racing, and some good passing, too.  The biggest problem that Accord has is the dust.  Last Friday there was no problem in getting the regular show plus a couple of held over features run prior to curfew.

With the Cup race running on Monday, for the second week in a row, I was rather anxious to see how the crowd would be at Watkins Glen.  As they were about to start, I noticed the large red & yellow stands that are on the main straight, to have mucho empty seats.  If I’m not mistaken, those stands came from the now defunct Nazareth track.  If you recall, last week, Pocono was still quite full.  As the Watkins Glen race progressed, one could see that there was quite a decent crowd on hand on Monday, although I really can’t recall the cameras showing those former Nazareth stands much once the race was underway.

There’s been a lot of talk/rumors lately about the possibility of Danica Patrick leaving Open Wheel racing and going to NASCAR Cup racing.  In my way of thinking, Danica is just a shade to small to manhandle a Cup car.  On top of that, would she be willing to spend a year or two in a lower class, like Nationwide or the Truck Series?  After seeing how some of the drivers were at the end of the Watkins Glen Cup race, it just, in my way of thinking, that Danica surely doesn’t have the strength and possibly stamina to run a race like the one run on Monday.

In keeping on the Cup race at the Glen, as they were showing what cars/drivers were going to have in car cameras in them.  Jeff Gordon was one of them.  When I saw that, I said to my wife – “Uh oh, Jeff will surely crash today”.  I was correct.  It seems that most every time he has an in car camera, he has problems, doesn’t it?  There is a video of the accident and I have a link to it in my “Video time” section, below.

As of Wednesday, I see there are only 45 entrants for the Cup race in Michigan this coming weekend, while the Nationwide Series ahs 53.  The Trucks race at Bristol next Wednesday, August 19th, along with the NASCAR Whelen Modifieds.

Racing on TV:

Check out what’s on TV, racing wise, here:  http://www.racefantv.com/USTV.htm

The Prelude to the Dream will be run on September 9th.  Again, it will be on HBO PPV.  However, if things go as they have the last few years, don’t be surprised to see a condensed version come out in a few weeks on SPEED – at no cost.  In a way, I kinda think that, although it’s nice to see the event live, more and more will probably opt to wait a couple of weeks and watch it free.  My thoughts:  In time, it might not be on PPV, and end up on SPEED as a tape delayed event.

Well, in a way, is it “History be damned”?  With the announcement that Scott Dixon set a record for wins in Indy cars with his twentieth win last Sunday, a lot of folks are wondering about the history of Indy car racing – like what about A.J. Foyt and his 67 wins, or Mario with 52, Michael Andretti with 42, Al Unser, Sr. with 39, Bobby Unser with 35, Little Al with 34 and Paul Tracy with 31?

Check out what some are saying by going here:  http://www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127130

At one time, the Indy 500 was the ONLY race that was run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Then NASCAR came in with the stock cars.  Then F-1.  Then Indy Lights.  Now, someone is asking if there might be a second race, for Indy cars – using the road course, at the speedway.  In a way, I can see this happening, especially the way Indycar is going – more and more away from ovals.  Here’s the link to what some are saying about a possible second Indycar race at IMS:

I don’t know – maybe I was lucky – but I didn’t hear our National Anthem done the way it was done last weekend, at Mid Ohio – per what some folks are saying, here:

I found the link, below on TF.  I first read of Schumacher NOT making a return to F-1 in my paper on Wednesday morning.  As I said in last weeks column, I wasn’t all that happy with him coming out of retirement because in many cases, when a driver does that, the results are sometimes not that good.

Red Bull to stay with Toyota: It looks like Team Red Bull will be sticking with Toyotas and TRD engines in 2010, rather than jump to Chevys and Rick Hendrick horsepower. Team manager Jay Frye said he expected to make some announcements on everything in the next week or so. Brian Vickers' contract renewal with Red Bull has been up in the air, but Vickers is expected to get a new deal with the team, and Vickers is also expected to drive some for Toyota Nationwide owner Todd Braun in 2010.(MikeMulhern.net)(8-10-2009)

Note:  I’m not surprised on this, especially with the problems that GM has had.

EGR to switch to Hendrick engines? If Team Red Bull does stay in the Toyota camp, that could open up a Rick Hendrick engineering and engine option for car owner Chip Ganassi and driver #42-Juan Pablo Montoya. Ganassi and Montoya are running Chevrolets this season, with engines supplied through Richard Childress. However General Motors' bankruptcy and racing cutbacks have left a number of issues and sponsorships up in the air.(MikeMulhern.net)(8-10-2009)

Note:  As it says above, the GM bankruptcy and sponsorship issues could possibly throw some monkey wrenches into a lot of teams and their plans.

Gordon's back sore after wreck: Jeff Gordon quotes following multi-car accident on lap 61 with #77-Hornish Jr. and #31-Burton:
MAN THAT LOOKED PAINFUL. "It was. It wasn't that hard of a hit its just my back can't stand too many hits. I really was concerned for Sam (Hornish). He took a heavy hit into the wall, a heavy hit by me and Jeff Burton. I saw him go off into the grass and I knew he was going to come out in front of me and I was just hoping to squeeze by and didn't make it. It just made a rough weekend for the DuPont Chevrolet even worse. Now we just leave here and focus on Michgian."
HOW DO YOU FEEL RIGHT NOW? "I'm hurting. Everything feels good except my lower back where I've already had issues. It will jsut take a couple of weeks for it to heal. By then we'll go to Bristol and get through that then we'll be alright."
HOW IS YOUR BACK? ARE YOU OKAY? "It's just not what I needed you know. You take three or four steps forward up to this point, and you take a hit like that and you take a couple steps backwards. So yeah, it was a heavy impact. I'm just glad Sam (Hornish) is all right.
WHAT WILL YOU HAVE TO DO THIS WEEK TO GET READY FOR MICHIGAN NEXT WEEK WITH YOUR BACK?
"Oh, Michigan is pretty easy. If we were going to Bristol next week, I'd be concerned. So we've got a couple of weeks to hopefully heal. We went through this at Dover when I hit at Dover and hurt my back as well. Every time I hit something it takes a toll on my back, but it seems to recover. But when you're braking that hard it's already pretty tight and then you hit like that and it spasms a bit. But we'll be all right.
ARE YOU SORE? "Oh man, my left side and my back is super sore. It's going to take probably a couple of weeks for it to heal completely and then we'll be back to new. This happened at Dover when I hit the wall in Dover it was similar. This is a little bit different angle and it's hurting. Luckily we've got Michigan coming up next weekend. It's pretty easy on things."
HOW MUCH DO YOU PROTECT YOUR BACK NOW? "There's nothing you can do. You got to get out there and you've got to just hope you don't get into situations. It's not life-threatening or anything its just painful. I've had MRI's and everything else after these things and everything looks fine. It's just some spasms that go on. You've just got to calm that down but it doesn't just calm down by itself in a day. It really does take a couple of weeks."(Chevy Racing)(8-11-2009)

More on Jeff Gordon's back: #24-Jeff Gordon is looking forward to a smoother drive this weekend at Michigan International Speedway after taking a hard hit during Monday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Watkins GlenInternational. During Monday's road course event at The Glen, Gordon was involved in a frightening accident when Sam Hornish Jr.'s race car slid into a tire barrier and spun directly into the path of the #24 DuPont Chevy. The violent hit certainly did not help Gordon's already aching lower back. "My back is stiff today, but I'll be fine and ready to go this weekend," Gordon said Tuesday afternoon. "Luckily, Michigan is up next and it's been pretty easy on my back in the past."(HMS Site)(8-11-2009)

Note:  For sure this will keep Jeff out of the Prelude to the Dream Late Model race on September 9th.  With him now having a family, I can see his racing career cut shorter than what he had originally thought of, with these back problems.

Lawsuit reveals insight on crew pay: A lawsuit against Roush Fenway Racing gives a look into the world of crew members and what they earn and what their contracts can be like. Jason Myers, former car chief for Carl Edwards, has filed suit against Roush Fenway Racing for wrongful discharge (i.e. firing) and in violation of the Family Medical Leave Act. Myers, who joined Roush in 2002 and was Edwards' car chief (title just below crew chief) from 2006-2008. Court documents stated that Myers suffered from depression and attempted suicide three times. The court document states that on Feb. 17, 2009, the team fired him "for allegedly not noifying anyone that he would miss work on Friday, Feb. 13.'' The case has moved to federal court. Monday, Roush Fenway Racing filed a motion to dismiss Myers' wrongful discharge claim. Roush Fenway Racing claims in court documents that Myers was "not employed with Roush as an employee at-will as required to state a claim of wrongful discharge under North Carolina law. In this case, Myers was emplyed with Roush pursuant to an employment agreement dated January 11, 2008.'' Roush submitted Myers' contract as part of its court documents on Monday. Just like driver contracts, crew contracts are kept confidential. Teams don't want other teams to know what they're paying or how they're compensating their employees. Get a look at the contract information with salary/bonus at the Virginian Pilot.(8-11-2009)

Ok, I admit it – last week I had a major “Brain fart” and forgot to put in that the Dirt Oval was closed last week.  I had it written down, too, and never checked it off!

This week at the Dirt Oval:  Double point race and a World Formula race

Former OVRP Dirt Oval runners:

At Penn Can, in the Modified feature, Danny Creeden was 14th.  In the 600 Modifieds, Brad Szulewski was 3rd.

Johnny Guarino was 12th in the Modified feature at New Egypt.

The ARDC Midgets went down to Rocky Mount, NC for a show at County Line Speedway and Justin Grosz was 8th in the feature.

Roger Coss was leading the Legends feature at Wall Stadium by a full straight when he hit some oil and spun.  He ended up 7th.

David Webb won the SK Light Modified feature at Stafford while Lauren Cooper was 14th.

At Lebanon Valley, in the Sportsman feature, Kyle Armstrong was 7th, Kolby Schroder 8th and Alex Bell 13th.

At Accord, on Friday night, in the held over Modified feature, Greg Hastie was 18th.  He duplicated that finish in the nights regular feature.  In the Sportsman feature, Brian Krummel was 6th and Mike Ruggiero 19th.  Anthony Perrego won the Spec Sportsman feature with Kyle Rohner 2nd.

In the Super Dirt Series Modified feature at Canandaigua, Michael Storms was 24th.  At Brewerton, in another SDS race, he was 20th.

At OCFS, in the Modified feature, Danny Creeden was 7th and Clinton Mills 23rd.  Anthony Perrego made it two feature wins in two days when he won the Sportsman feature.  Rich Coons was 2nd, Matt Janiak 4th, Matt Hitchcock 5th, Mike Ruggiero 6th, Joe Conklin 7th, Bobby Hassenmayer 22nd and Doc Young 23rd.

This past Tuesday, at Penn Can in the RoC event, Danny Creeden was 24th.

Family members in racing:

Until he gets some more dollars, grandson John Rizzo, down in Florida, has suspended his racing activities.  As for grandson Brett, it looks like he’ll be running a Kart at OVRP’s Dirt Oval this Saturday.

Other racin’ stuff:

Something I didn’t know, believe it or not – at one time there was a stand-alone midget race at Watkins Glen, which will be covered in my “More racin’ stuff”, below.  With the exception of Sir Stirling Moss, in 1959, in a Formula Libre race that was held at the Glen, on a cold, rainy and snowy day on October 18, 1959, Eddie Johnson would have won that race.

Here’s a link to some excellent photos from that 1959 race:

 http://www.barcboys.com/GlenFormLibre1959.htm

And, if you notice a little box in the upper right hand corner – well that leads to the race results, if you clicked on it, which I’ve done for you, here:

http://www.barcboys.com/Images/GlenLibre/1959/59%20WGFL%20results.jpg

Yes, Moss won by seven laps.  My brother was there for that race and he said that Moss would pass the midgets on the inside of a turn, in the rain and snow, and as he passed, he’d give them a wave.

In the photos, there is one of Jiggs Peters in a Ken Brenn # 24 midget.  Well, since this race was a few months after the Lime Rock Formula Libre race, which Rodger Ward won in a # 24 Ken Brenn midget, I’d venture to say that, yes, it’s the same car.

More racin’ stuff:

As I said above, I was unaware of a stand-alone midget race ever being held at the Glen.  Being a member of the Yahoo! Race History Group, I do receive all e-mails sent out by other group members.   Yes, at times, there are quite a lot of them that might pertain to one specific subject.  Here, below, I one of those e-mails.  This one gives the story of that midget race that was held at the Glen.

“The stand alone midget race at Watkins Glen was on 23 August 1963*

Results:
1 Eddie Johnson
2 Mel Kenyon
3 Bud Tinglestad
4 Tommy Kopp
5 Leonard Stephens
6 Herb Swan
7 Billy Mehner
8 Johnny Riva
9 Les Scott
10 Cotton Farmer

The interesting thing is that the midgets averaged 93.6 mph for 100 miles. The main event of the sports car meeting the day before saw Dick Thompson win the main in a Corvette Grand Sport. His average was 90.8 for 62 miles.”

I don’t know if there were more than 10 cars in the race.

What I find to be somewhat interesting is that USAC sanctioned two midget races here in the East on that date, which was a Friday. The one above and one at the Wall Township Speedway in Belmar, NJ, which was won by Bob Harkey.  Looking at the results of the Belmar event, I see that Kenyon, Riva and Tinglestad competed in both.  Interesting, to say the least.  It’s quite a haul from Watkins Glen to Belmar.  Checking out directions via “Mapquest” – and using today’s highway system, I found this:

Total Travel Estimates: Time: 5 hours 9 minutes    Distance: 287.10 miles”

*Note:  I questioned this in an e-mail to the Yahoo! Race History Group, and I received this response:

“Here's what happened re the 1963 USAC midget race at Watkins Glen.

The SCCA had a National event on Saturday 24 Aug 1963. 9 races for various classes.

USAC had a midget race on Sunday 25 Aug 1963. No sports cars or Formula Libre cars entered. I know nothing of heats, etc.

BTW, there are sites where you can get historic calendars to check day of dates. I checked the above.

Sorry my original posting had an incorrect date.”

The History of the Sport:

At times, we’ve lost drivers while they were competing on the speedways.  Here, below, is just a small, partial list of those that have perished while doing what they loved to do – alphabetically, with last names starting with the letters “N” and “O”, this week.  I imagine that you might recognize some of the names listed.   Later on, in future columns, I’ll continue my way through the alphabet.

Other (non racing) news:

Cash for Clunkers – how about this, which I found on the internet on a message board:

My just-out-of-college friend Rose would have benefited greatly from this program. She needs a new car, and she's specifically interested in small hybrids-not married, no kids, no trailers loaded with cinderblocks to tow or oil rig crews to haul....she has a 1990 Taurus, which is by any reasonable definition, a CLUNKER. It has enough miles on it to get to the Moon and most of the way back, and literally makes clunking noises when it shifts. It can be started with a screwdriver. It has large holes in the plastic bumper cover in front and the tail lights are jury-rigged. But she found out two days ago that she can't trade it in as a clunker for this program because, way back when during the first Bush Administration when hair metal was king and Saddam hadn't yet invaded Kuwait, the EPA rated it at 21 MPG. I think the only way it makes 21 MPG TODAY is by getting 18 MPG on gas and making up the difference by burning oil. But it's not a "clunker"

While on the subject of car sales, have you heard that out of the 250 GM car dealers in California, 225 of them are entering a trial program that started on Tuesday and will end of September 8th – selling cars on eBay on line on eBay Motors and eBay’s main site.

I suppose that by now you’ve heard about the new GM Volt car that is being touted as getting 230 MPG?  What I can’t figure out is that they won’t be available for over a year from now.  Whether the $40,000.00 price tag will hurt sales remains to be seen.  Here’s an article about it on Yahoo:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090811/ap_on_bi_ge/us_gm_volt_mileage

Health news:

Less consumer “protection”?  Here’s just a little from the link, below”

It's one issue in the health care debate that nearly everyone — even the insurance lobby — seems to agree on: Better consumer protections are needed to end the nightmare of not being able to get covered for a treatable, if costly, illness.”

Closing with these:

I got these two in two different e-mails.  Hope no one is offended!

Then there was this one:

Unreal....

How would you pronounce this child's name?

Le-a

Leah??  No.

Lee-A??  Nope.

Lay-a??  No.

Lei??  Guess again.

This child attends school in Detroit, MI.

Her mother is irate because everyone is mispronouncing her daughter's name.

It's pronounced "Ledasha"

When the mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, "the dash don't be silent."

SO, if you see something come across your desk like this, please remember to pronounce the dash.  If they axe you why, tell them the dash don't be silent...

May “Guardian Angels” sit on the shoulders of all of our race drivers and guide them safely around the tracks!

Drive safe!
